Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad

Posted under Anime/Manga

I just finished watching this series the other day. I loved it, what made me want to watch it was that at the Anna Tsuchiya concert at AX the kid behind us was asking his friend what she was from. He responded, “Oh from that series NANA, it’s like Beck but for girls.” After hearing this and the fact that I completely love Nana, I thought I’d give this show a try.

In all I liked this show, the music was interesting, I will say that I like listening to it in the car but if I had never seen the show I wouldn’t care for it much. It’s more of I remember how difficult it was for a character to write a certain song then I hear it and I get attached to it.

I will say I completely agree with that the boy said at the concert. The two shows are very similar, dealing with the bands, the music and the character’s personal lives. I will say my only complaint is the horrible engrish. I usually don’t mind if a character is supposed to speak English and it’s not perfect but there are a handful of American characters in Beck and for them to have really bad English it makes me feel like they didn’t even try to find people who speak english. But then my friend is watching the Dub at the moment and she gets confused when a character that is supposed to be speaking English and the others don’t understand them. “Since they are all speaking English it seems weird,” she says. That’s another reason I don’t watch dubs, when a character is supposed to not talk properly or have a different dialect they usually just give them a southern accent or have them all talk the same and assume that the viewer will understand.

But as I said in all I liked this anime very much. It made me want to run out and start a band, but then my only friends with musical talent don’t like my taste in music. :(

In all i give this show a B+
