I'm a huge fan of Akira, and when I first started collecting figures one of the first figures I got was Alpha's Kaneda. The one of him sitting on the red chair. Ever since I got him I wanted the Tetsuo to match, but haven't had the chance to get him. I spotted him once at a con for $40 which wasn't a… [more]

Kyo-Ani's first step into making anime figures was such a lovely success. When Yuki was first announced I was apprehensive on getting her since Kyo-ani never made any figures before. In episode 177 of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars we meet a teacher who discovered a comet a few years ago. Well in the episode he mentions that he named the comet Francois…

Francois?! Girlfriend!? No way jose! Francois is a boy’s name! How do i know? thats my dad’s name
Francois is French for Francis or Frank. Francis being the masculine form of the word. So for everyone out there is you meet a girl and her name is Frances she’s a girl spell it with an “E,” if it’s a dude spell it with an “I”. I hate when people spell my name wrong lol.
But back on the subject, maybe the translators got it wrong and it was supposed to be Francoise which would be Frances in French. But there is a difference in the pronunciation of the name as well, but then they are japanese so if they have trouble speaking English, they might have trouble with French as well.
Guess we’ll never know about the name because Stars probably won’t ever get licensed. I remember this episode though. Any Ami-centric episode was a good episode.
Sailormoon was probably the reason I’m a huge of Hisakawa Aya and Mitsuishi Kotono.
The context of the episode and the teacher’s embarrassment about the subject tends to make me think that the authors knew that Francois was a man’s name. Sailor Moon series are know for their positive portrayal of gay relationships, and this could be an example.
