I’ve decided that I’m going for it! I need a display case for my figures. At the moment I’m using my bookcases to display my figures. But lately I really want a display case. I think since everything is going well with this job at the moment I’ll get it next month since I happen to have no figures pre-ordered for April.
I’m always putting off buying a case in exchange for buying more figures. The $50-70 I’ll use for a case could be spent on more figures, but honestly lately I’m thinking it’ll be a wiser investment to have someplace to display my figures. I am looking now at the Detolf as most people have already. My brother owns one so I’ve seen it in person. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it’s going to have some wasted space since the shelves aren’t adjustable. I don’t have many 1/6 scale figures, the majority of my collection are 1/8 figures so it seems like I’ll have plenty of space wasted. The other day I say this one display case in an antique store, it was amazingly beautiful but way too much money.

Now excuse my horrible artist rendering that took me forever on MS paint. But this pretty much is what it looked like. It honestly would have had no wasted space, there was tons of space for 1/8 figures and for 1/6 figures. Where was a space that I knew even my Jun Planning Ryuk and my soon to come Alter Fate would fit. When we walked in the lady mentioned that everything was 50% off, I thought the sticker on the cabinet said $200. So since it was there and I had the money I thought “hey $100 isn’t bad considering how beautiful this is!” Then the lady comes up and asks me if I like this piece, I mention that I’m interested and she goes “it’s a good deal right now, half off so it’s only $1,000.” Turns out I’m blind as a bat and the sticker didn’t say $200 but $2,000. I got out of there as fast as I could! Why is it that all the nice things I want are super expensive! The only reason I’m getting the Detolf is because it’s relatively cheap here only $59.99. I keep wandering into furniture stores looking for something anything really for a display case but have had no luck. What I’d honestly like the most is my grandmother had this beautiful display case it was about 3ft wide and 5 1/2 ft tall. It was all glass with a metal frame. Had a light on top to shine down with some floral accents on the frame in the corners. I have yet to see one like it but if I ever do I will get it! It’s the perfect display case ever!

I’ll be replacing this that it originally for my TV but since i almost never watch TV i felt it would be better suited for a place to place some of my figures, but it’s a big space waster. Since my brother has moved out i can place this in his room with my old tv. so it’s not like i’m throwing it away.

I’m just tired of using my bookcases for figure display. Plus this case isn’t at the forefront of my room so it seems like the reject spot even though I love these figures as well…

My new baby!
Who needs a TV in your room when you’ve got a kick ass computer and nice widescreen LCD monitor! This was a present from my dad, I’ve been running of a crappy laptop for too long and it started to break more and more recently so my dad and brother got together and got me this lovely new computer. My brother makes computers for a living so it’s a custom built computer! It’s pretty darn awesome!

Erm with your number of figures, I would say 2-3 Detolfs is more like the actual number of cabinets you need. Especially if you want to display all of them in style and design their positions so that they look nice and fitting. Getting a larger display case (and saving up for it) in this situation would be what I feel to be a more worthy investment.

@ Panther:
actually what I’m going to do is get two detolfs cabinets and then make glass shelves attached the the wall in between each cabinet. that way it’s like one giant cabinet.

As soon as I saw the subject line of this post I said to myself, “This person needs to get a glass display case!” It seems you and I think alike.
I think to make it look extra nice/cool, you might want to think about lighting as well.
The only problem with the DETOLF one at IKEA is that (I think) I’ve seen it in person, and to me it seemed a little light and flimsy. However, if you anchor it properly to the wall and/or floor, I think it should be okay …

I have a Detolf, you can see it in my blog and how I displayed my figures. I agree totally that it is flimsy and prone to an easy crash if you are not careful. Your idea is good, saves up quite a bit on cash too. Guess you got the space to do that, I certainly have none of that luxury here in tiny wannabe island. Good luck getting it done would love to see it when it is up.

Personally I would never buy the detolf cabinets because there are better ones out there. Like the one I have here: http://www.moemoerabu.net/2007/02/28/step-into-the-world-of-otakuism-or-in-short-my-room/
This only costs me $550 AUD and I put it together myself.

Hey your figures don’t get all dusty? Since you display them in the open..

@prim3:
yeah they do actually, i dust them about once a week.

Once a week wow. I clean them like once every 6 months if I am lucky. That is a lot of figures to clean once per week.

I agree with Adun too about the Detlof. I know I’ve recommended it to you in the past, but at this point, I would rather have something else. The main reason I have one is space reasons. My place simply cannot accommodate anything bigger. It has it’s pluses (price, look), but also has negatives (nonadjustable shelves, somewhat flimsy).
I had no other options, unless I wanted to significantly rearrange my room… and I’m not going through that effort for figures. Plus, nearly half of my collection spends 1/3 of the year back in their boxes anyways, so I don’t need to worry about storage as much.
