Figure Boxes and Storage

Posted under Figures

As many figure collectors know the pains of figure storage. There are some of us who toss out all the boxes and there are other like me who keep them all. Why do you ask? Well there are a few reasons, #1 if i ever decide to sell said figure having the box will help retain it’s value. #2 if i ever need to store them for the summer to prevent leaning, and #3 if i ever move it’ll be the best way to move my figures and prevent as much damage as possible. In my entire collection of figures there are only a few that i don’t have the boxes for. Ok only one, my Good Smile Company Kaname Chidori, she doesn’t have her box. I bought her without the box from this one store but I’m sure that she’s a real figure since i saw the box before i bought it. But when i went back a while later to get her the owner threw out her box since she was on display in their glass cabinet he thought there was no point in keeping her box…
Now i’m going to walk you through my entire box collection. Makes me feel like i have more boxes than figures thats for sure!

Here we have my Kotobukiya figure boxes. I have more Kotobukiya figures than anyone else simply for impulse buys. I think the only Kotobukiya figures i sat and thought about buying were Mahoro, Aruruu, Dokuro, Saber and Rin. the rest were all cheap and i had money so i took them home…

Here are all my Max Factory Boxes. I have to say the onyl figure that was an impulse buy was Van, but he is so worth it. MF has some amazing figures and I am eager to add more of their lineup to my collection!

These are all from Alter, not many but i do love the quality of these figures. Might be adding more Alter figures to my collection as well at AX.

This sad little collection puzzles me, i love Good Smile Company, LOVE THEM! but i have like no figures from them! But a lot of my pre-orders or GSC than any other company!

Here we’ve got all my Sega boxes. I have sega figures for one reason and one reason only. CHEAP!!~ Sega figures are amazing for being so cheap. if they charged $40-60 like everyone else I’d be pissed, but since i paid from $10 to $20 for each figure here i have no complaints!

Now all of my Kaiyodo Figures, not many. The only impulse buys from them are the Hime Kuri girls but they are well made and only cost me $35 for both. The Bome figures i only own since i like the characters. I never really liked the design or poses from Bome figures and the pain jobs are usually really crappy.

here we have the left overs. Megahouse, Yamato, Wave, Jun Planning, Konami, Griffon Enterprises, E2046, Clayz, Banpresto, and a few other small names. Yoko is in her box since it’s gotten so hot and she was leaning so i’m leaving her there until it cools down a bit.

So here you have it, all my figures boxes. They used to all be in my closet but now that my brother has moved everything from his closet since he moved out over a year ago i can finally move these to his old room. I told my mom even though she wants to use the room as a guest room/office, the closet is mine!

Do you keep your figure boxes? if not why? and if so are they for the same reasons as me?

    Wow, those are a lot of boxes! You could build a fort.

    Not knowing that there were any practical advantages to keeping the box, I threw out the box for my oldest figure, Mr. Iron.

    Mrs. Can of Liquid Wrench Penetrating Oil came without a box. Sometimes I keep her in a plastic bag.

    I still have Tidus’s box. It’s not such a hassle, but if I ever get more figures, I can see how boxes would quickly eat up space.

    Wow, I will also keep my boxes even if there are so many.. The box looks nice not to be thrown..

    And it must be hard for you to stack those boxes very high.. ^^

    Haaa~ this reminds me all those boxes of mine T_T
    I keep them, in case I would have to move, or maybe sell them. But I think I can easily move my figures without their respective box (already did for convensions), and I don’t think I would sell them, even the ugly ones I like no more ^^;
    So… for now they are all stocked in a guest room and in the attic of my parents house (lucky!) but this is going to be a serious problem this summer… since the guest room is initially for… guests, not figure boxes ^^;

    I should try to organise them along the walls. They make a pretty good decoration, don’t they? ^^

    I only have a few resin figures (e2046), I tend to go for quality rather than quantity, and I only buy characters that I know from anime/manga, otherwise there’s just not enough ‘connection’. These two things help me limit my collection, and let me enjoy the ones that I do have, more. Also, I hope that they will retain better value (like my perfect e2046 Haruhi bunny in black). I have all the boxes, and because they are for resins the boxes are even bigger, but so be it. If I get more figures I will probably switch them out and I will keep a few hidden away from the sun for a while.

    i keep my boxes as well. but only the nice ones. plain ones will be thrown away like the kotobukiyi evangelion 1.0 Rei and Misato.

    biggest box i have is the freeing 1/4 mikuru bunny and box for my stormtrooper helmet.

    I keep all of my figure boxes, though my reason is mainly that I’m a collector/packrat, so I can’t bring myself to throw stuff like that away. Right now I don’t have too many but soon I’ll need to find a new place to store them, my closet’s much too small and is already full of stuff.

  9. Crisu on 09 Jun 2008 at 9:12 am #

    I love all my boxes and will keep them forever.

    Although I guess in the worst-case scenario, you could open all the flaps and flatten them. And then you’d have to sacrifice the form-fitting plastic and just use lots of tissue paper or foam pellets later if you ever need to re-box the figures.

    Like you I keep my boxes but I do not have that many either. I probably have to clear out my storage cabinet soon for more boxes coming in.

    I don’t have many figures because of storage problems but I keep all the boxes.
    One thing that frustrates me is why some small figures have HUGE boxes for no reason what so ever.

    I would have liked to keep my boxes, but storage is a huge problem for me so I throw them all away. Although I have some boxes filled with other things (I have one box filled with extra bits & bases I don’t use) for figures.

    I’m keeping the boxes too, and store in the closet too. Somehow just seeing the empty boxes make it interesting.

    By the way, can you talk more about this leaning thing in Summer? what is that? I’m a newbie collector :p

    Why do the boxes look bigger than they should?? LOL.

    I keep my boxes so it’ll be easier to transport when I move out. Though luckily for me I store my empty boxes in a separate location in the house.

    @coco the bean:
    i was actually thinking of that!

    @Baka-Raptor:
    well good thing Mr. Iron and Mrs. Can of Liquid Wrench Penetrating Oil have you to take wonderful care of them.

    @Fariz Asuka:
    took me a good hour to pull them all out and then stack them that high, plus took some maneuvering to make sure they didn’t topple over…

    @lu-k: yeah i’m pretty much going to have top do the same once they go into the guest room and out of my own room. At least i have my closet back!

    @Keats:
    i keep the same philosophy, i also own the Haruhi Bunny but in Red, i tech. had the black one as well but my brother wanted it so badly and he gave me top dollar for her. Plus i get to see her whenever i like and i know she’s being well taken care of!

    @gordon:
    biggest box i have is my Jun Planning Ryuk, they take up lots of space but i even keep the plain boxes…

    @Crisu:
    the form fitting part is the most important! If they start to lean it’s the best place for storage after you fix them to make sure they don’t start to lean again!

    @Lauren:
    oh i know! i’ve got some teeny little figures with boxes 3 or 4 times their size…

    @Lsio:
    Heat makes some figures lean, not all but some. If you have a figure that is prone too leaning you can box him/her up before it starts getting too hot during the summer months to prevent leaning.

    @Adun:
    they do look a big in the photos…

    Now that’s one big pile of figure boxes!!!!! I have the same issue. I keep the figure boxes for good reasons. Right now, it’s stacking around my room. For people who seen my room, you should know…

    I haven’t kept most of my boxes since they take up space, so I’ve thought of using ziploc bags to store the figures while in transportation.

  19. Belela-san on 11 Jun 2008 at 11:53 am #

    I also store my boxes, can’t throw them away, although not many boxes are nice looking like Mirei’s box or the Shuraki’s ones. The ones I especially like to keep are the gundam ones.

    I keep all my boxes and try to keep them in the exact condition I got them in. They do take up a lot of space, but they proved worth it since I’m moving next Monday and had to put my figurines back in their boxes for protection.

    Also, how could someone just throw out the box? They look so nice! I too have that Makoto Sawatari figurine and I really like the nice looking box. I haven’t taken her out of the box yet…waiting until I get a Display case. My other figurines got dusty which sucks..but I doubt can do any harm to them.

    I don’t have too many figurines but I noticed they all have the authentic stickers on them except for the 3 that were sold in the United States by “Entertainment Earth.”

    Are all non-Import figures missing the shiny sticker on the box?

    I now realise I should have kept all my boxes, but I only realised that when I thought about transporting figures when I go off to uni!! I still have about half of the boxes from the figures I bought though… so its ok-ish, I’m just gonna be stressy about the ones without boxes, like my Clalaclan, Chie, Belldandy etc…. Hauuuuu How will I do it safely???
